U12 Tidal Waves · 3-3-2 · Tonight 5:30 PM

Winger · Center Mid · StrikerTriangle Attack

The solo rogue striker ends tonight. Every attack runs through the W-C-S triangle — winger, center mid, striker — with three rehearsed patterns, a 30-minute practice block, and four sideline calls for matchday.

Academy lens

Three academies, one session. Every pattern below is built from their methods — never generic youth soccer.

Man City U12

Third-player combinations. The Up-Back-Through is the classic third-man run: striker sets, CM releases, winger arrives at full speed.

Barça U12

Positional triangles. The ball-carrier always has two options. Rondos teach the layoff; the trio rule makes it law.

Ajax

Lane occupation. Wingers own the touchline lane, strikers own the box lanes, the CM owns the half-space — crash zones are just lanes with names.

The one rule of the night

Never attack alone — always bring your triangle.

The trioboth flanks · shared CM
NEVER ATTACK ALONE — ALWAYS BRING YOUR TRIANGLE Every attack is run by the W-C-S Trio: Winger + Center Mid + Striker CM LM LS RM RS CB FB LEFT TRIO: LM + CM + LS RIGHT TRIO: RM + CM + RS One striker sprinting alone = no triangle = no attack.
The trio

The W-C-S Trio

Every attack is run by three players. Left side: LM + CM + LS. Right side: RM + CM + RS. One striker sprinting alone is not an attack — it is a turnover waiting to happen.

  1. Teach it as a rule, not a suggestion: no triangle, no attack.
  2. The triangle gives the ball-carrier two options at all times — that is the whole secret.
  3. The CM is shared by both trios: the hub every attack spins around.

Cue: “Never attack alone — always bring your triangle!”

The three patterns

Three pictures, three calls. Drill them until the players see the picture before you say the words.

Pattern Acentral channel
PATTERN A: "UP — BACK — THROUGH" Central combination · kills the urge to boot it over the top GK CB ST CM LM 1 2 3 1 UP: CM fires into striker's feet (striker shields, 2 steps back) 2 BACK: striker cushions it back “on a silver platter” 3 THROUGH: CM slides diagonal ball for the surging winger Cue: "UP, BACK, THROUGH!"
Pattern A

“Up — Back — Through”

Central combination. Replaces the instinct to boot the ball over the top.

  1. UP: CM passes firmly into the striker's feet. Striker takes two steps back toward the ball to shield it from the defender.
  2. BACK: Striker cushions a soft one-touch layoff backward — “on a silver platter” — to the supporting CM.
  3. THROUGH: CM slides a diagonal through-ball into the open wing channel for the surging winger in full stride.

Cue: “Up, Back, Through!”

Matches the Diamond Up-Back-Through drill the group already knows.

Pattern Btouchline lane
PATTERN B: "GIVE-AND-GO" Wide wing combination · for when the ball goes out wide first CM W ST FB CB 1 2 3 4 1: CM plays wide to winger on the touchline 2: Winger takes one touch, feeds striker checked to the sideline 3+4: Striker wall-passes behind the fullback — winger runs onto it Cue: "PASS, MOVE, GET IT BACK!"
Pattern B

“Give-and-Go”

Wide wing combination — for when the ball is played out wide first.

  1. CM passes wide to the winger on the touchline.
  2. Winger takes one touch forward, then passes into the near-side striker who has checked toward the sideline.
  3. Striker plays a first-time wall pass into the space behind the opposing fullback; the winger runs onto it.

Cue: “Pass, Move, Get It Back!”

Pattern Cpenalty box
PATTERN C: "THE 3 BOX CRASH ZONES" Finish the cross · no more balls rolling across an empty box GK W 1 NEAR POST Striker 1 2 FAR POST Striker 2 / weak-side W 3 TOP OF THE BOX CM S2 S1 CM Winger breaks the sideline → all three sprint to their zone. Near post: flick it · Far post: clean up · Top of box: cutbacks Cue: "NEAR POST, FAR POST, TOP OF THE BOX!"
Pattern C

“The 3 Box Crash Zones”

Finishing the cross. Solves the cross rolling across an empty box.

  1. Zone 1 — Near post (Striker 1): sprint to the front post, 6 yards out, to flick or redirect.
  2. Zone 2 — Far post (Striker 2 / weak-side winger): sprint to the back post to clean up over-hit balls.
  3. Zone 3 — Top of the box (CM): arrive at the penalty spot / 18-yard line for cutbacks and rebounds.
  4. Rule: whenever a winger breaks the sideline with the ball, the other three attackers sprint to their zones. No exceptions.

Cue: “Near post, Far post, Top of the box!”

Phase 1 · 10 min

Unopposed Shadow Waves

Half-field on a full goal with GK. No defenders. Pattern A on repeat until it is automatic.

Setup
  • Half-field, full goal + GK. Coach at midfield with a stack of balls.
  • Line up a CM, a winger, and two strikers at midfield.
Execution
  • Coach plays ball to CM → group runs Pattern A (CM → striker → CM → winger).
  • Winger drives down the touchline and crosses low.
  • Near-side striker attacks the near post, second striker the far post, CM arrives top of the box. Finish on goal.
  • 5 reps left (LM + CM + LS), then 5 reps right (RM + CM + RS). Rotate waiting players in after every shot.

Coaching focus: demand the layoff — the striker does not turn to shoot alone. Lay it off, spin into the box.

PHASE 2: 3v2 ATTACKING GAUNTLET (10 MIN) 35 × 30 grid · big goal + GK · must combine before shooting 35 × 30 yd grid GK W CM ST D D 1 2 3? RULE: complete one Up-Back or Give-and-Go before shooting. Striker shoots alone → goal does NOT count.
Phase 2 · 10 min

3v2 Attacking Gauntlet

35 × 30 yard grid leading to a big goal with GK. Same patterns, now with real defenders.

Setup
  • 35 × 30 yard grid, big goal + GK at one end.
  • 3 attackers (winger, CM, striker) vs 2 central defenders.
Rules
  • Attackers must complete at least one combination pass (Up-Back or Give-and-Go) before shooting.
  • Striker shoots without combining → the goal does not count.

Coaching focus: praise the hold-up and the layoff louder than the finish.

Phase 3 · 10 min8v8 / 9v9
PHASE 3: CONDITIONED SCRIMMAGE (10 MIN) 8v8 / 9v9 in the 3-3-2 · bonus points reward the triangle CB CB CB LM CM RM LS RS D D D D GK crash zones ⭐ BONUS: goal off a cross with runners in 2+ crash zones = 2 POINTS ⛔ CONNECTION RULE: striker with back to goal must find support before shooting Praise the hold-up + layoff louder than the finish.
Phase 3 · 10 min

Conditioned Scrimmage

Regular 8v8 or 9v9 in the 3-3-2. Two constraints force the triangle habit under pressure.

Bonus points
  • Any goal scored directly off a cross with runners in at least 2 of the 3 crash zones = 2 points.
The connection rule
  • If a striker receives the ball with their back to goal, they must find a supporting midfielder or winger before a shot can be taken.

Coaching focus: the connection rule is the whole session in one sentence. Enforce it every time.
